Which Diamond Pad to Use to Etch the Surface of a Concrete Floor

Etch the surface of a concrete floor

Question: I’m looking to put a solvent based sealer on my new workshop slab that was power troweled smooth. What DNA Satellite Pad grit should I use to etch the surface prior to sealing?

Answer: Our 30 grit Satellite Pad would provide great prep. These diamond impregnated concrete pads are unique because they have a diamond resin material blown onto both sides of the pads. They also have diamond dots (satellites) that allow for a superior flat cut that no other pad can do. Many customers find that on new concrete floors, all they need to get a professional polish job is to use our pads. No big grinder needed. Run them wet and clean up any residual concrete.

As far as sealer goes, we do have a good solvent based sealer called Crete Seal Gloss. If you want a step up from that we have our Crete Seal Plus EXT which is an MMA with a Siloxane in it. This product goes down just like a solvent acrylic, but has great water replant qualities and more durability. In addition, we would add our EZ Grip to these, which adds a very fine slip resistant additive to the sealer.

We still believe that polishing a new slab is the best way to go as opposed to putting a sealer on it. Our system with diamond pads makes this easy!
